Our Journey to Having our First Bed and Breakfast Guests!

Have you ever had a dream?  Perhaps it was a new career path you wanted to follow or a business you hoped to open.  We can relate!   John and I spent years dreaming, researching, studying, exploring and attending conferences to prepare ourselves to become Bed and Breakfast owners / event planners.  It was certainly an exciting journey!  We met wonderful people and learned an incredible amount of information to help us get started on our endeavor.  One VERY important person on our journey was our broker, Pete Holliday.  Pete and his wife, Phoebe, were the former owners of Holliday House Bed and Breakfast in Orange, Virginia.  Pete was also the President of the Virginia Bed and Breakfast Association for many years and is now currently the owner of TMG, a Virginia Inn Brokerage Firm.   We would not be here today without his help!  He has been a been a wonderful friend, mentor and encourager!

We would be remiss if we did not say that, though it was an exciting journey, it was also a very  bumpy ride (literally and figuratively!) as we traversed across several states with Pete at our side to visit potential Bed and Breakfast facilities.  We had a dream, a vision, of what we wanted… We even created a huge book that had a picture of our “IDEAL” Bed and Breakfast home and a listing of all the features we hoped it would have!  In retrospect, we had MUCH to learn!  Pete “held our hand” and guided us as we began to really look at various possibilities and put pen to paper to see what would really work.  We saw many properties that we loved but that were not feasible and others that were not our cup of tea.  Finally, we found “The One” and submitted a contract.  We were so excited that we barely slept!  Everything looked great and we were ready to move forward… until the entire deal fell apart a week before Christmas, 2015.  We were heartbroken, as you might imagine.

As with all things in life, John and I have discovered, God’s plan is not always the plan we have for our lives.  His plans are much greater! 🙂  We had a good cry (Ok.  Many weeks of crying!) and then we asked God to direct our paths and show us where HE wanted us to be…  And He did just that!  Though there are many stories to tell about how His hand led us to Winridge Manor despite many odds stacked against us, that will have to be another post! More stories to follow! Stay tuned!

As you can see from the picture of our “DREAM” Bed and Breakfast and the photo of our now LOVED B and B, they dream and the reality ended up being very different from what we imagined – And we couldn’t be happier! We are thrilled to have hosted our very first Bed and Breakfast guests last weekend and have found that the reality of our dreams far surpassed the hopes we had!

Here is a treasured review from our first guests, Scott and Stephanie.  We SO enjoyed their company and look forward to having them visit Winridge Manor many times in the future!

“Kelly and John’s home was lovely and in a great location. First the home. A beautiful old property with a cool history as we found out from them on our tour of the property. It is very old-style, early 20th century mansion with modern amenities. the bed was thoroughly comfortable with a great modern bathroom attached. We wish we could’ve enjoyed the balcony and the property more but the room was too comfortable. It is close to Lynchburg which is a beautiful town with lots of character and walking paths along the James River. Our hosts provided a great cheese and cracker plate on our arrival which was very welcome and delicious. The breakfast was a great way to start the day and very tasty! We felt spoiled! We will be back! If you are looking for a beautiful place to get away for a long weekend in the Virginia countryside, with nice restaurants close by as well as some very nice wineries, check out Kelly’s place! Excellent hosts, property, and location!” “Kelly and John’s home was lovely and in a great location. First the home.
